The Senate's own Democrat for Bush Zell Miller of Georgia gave quite a performance on the Don Imus show, comparing the Abu Ghraib prison abuse scandal, which entailed serious violations of the Geneva Conventions, with showering with dozens of other men in a gym -- men who were, apparently, "checking him out."
Here's Zell: "The two times I think I have been most humiliated in my life was standing in a big room, naked as a jaybird with about fifty others and they were checking us out, now that was humiliating. It was humiliating showering with sixty others in a public shower. It didn't kill us did it? No one ever died from humiliation."
Miller's "eloquence" on Abu Ghraib and the unfolding story of how the Bush administration not only tolerated but sanctioned abuse of prisoners in U.S. custody has been stunning. Just last week on the Senate floor, he offered this bit of oratory:
"Those who are wringing their hands and shouting so loudly for 'heads to roll' over this seem to have conveniently overlooked the fact that someone's head HAS rolled -- that of another innocent American brutally murdered by terrorists ... Why is it that there's more indignation over a photo of a prisoner with underwear on his head than over the video of a young American with no head at all?"
Miller, like his friend Sen. Inhofe of Oklahoma, fail to see how one could be appalled at both the gruesome murder of an American civilian and the interrogations run amok in Abu Ghraib and elsewhere. And apparently they've neglected to read the Red Cross report that showed how the majority of prisoners at Abu Ghraib were there by mistake -- they weren't "terrorists plotting to kill us."
It's no wonder there's a petition circulating to get Zell Miller booted from the Democratic Party.
