Ashley Dupre is back, and with her she's brought some major attitude. In a new blog post, ex-Gov. Eliot Spitzer's infamous escort announces that she hasn't been given a second chance by the American public because we're "liars and hypocrites" -- especially, those of us who engage in more widely accepted exchanges of money for companionship.
In Dupre's worldview, "most girls, to varying degrees of course, want to be pampered and have nice shoes, designer handbags and gorgeous clothes." Many of these covetous, commercially lustful women "target guys with money and use them to get these things." They "toy with them, flirt, go on dates, have sex and then drop hints about that new dress at the store down the street or being short on rent money -- and the guys deliver it." Often, these women "stay in [the relationship] because they have a nice home, a car and spending money -- they would rather stay in an unfulfilling or loveless relationship than lose that security." These, she declares, are "dishonest" relationships.
Obviously, this is how Dupre saw her work as an escort: Most of us are prostitutes, some of us are merely more upfront and honest about it. She hugely overstates her case by assuming that most women crave the princess treatment and by categorizing such a large swath of the female species as coldhearted gold diggers. Dupre does make a reasonable point: The sexual economy is hardly limited to straightforward prostitution. It's just unfortunate that in defending her own position, she had to denigrate women standing on every other point on the sex-for-money spectrum.
