Death of a dirty agent

This week's mini-whodunit is by Tim Green, suspense novelist and former NFL star. The first reader to guess the murderer's identity and the motive wins a $25 gift certificate from Borders Books and Music.

Editor's note: Though most of the characters in the following story are real, the events are purely fictitious.

Occasionally, during the off-season, NFL stars from different teams will get together with each other as friends. Forgotten are the vicious battles that raged between them during the fall. One such occasion was a yearly hunting trip put together by Bart Perfidy, agent of several star players. Each February, after the Super Bowl, Perfidy would invite a select handful of his clients to his hunting lodge deep in the backwoods of Maine near a town called Cedar Springs. The cabin was set in the midst of a hunting preserve owned by a friend of Perfidy's, so hunting was legal year round.

The sky was crisp and blue on the afternoon that Brett Favre, Troy Aikman, Reggie White and Nate Newton rode up in a rented Taurus whose back end was scraping the frozen chunks of ice that were scattered across the freshly-plowed drive leading up to the cabin. Despite the frigid temperature, two figures were outside throwing a football back and forth on the long, wide porch. Both were bundled in winter clothing from head to toe.
