"Beach Blanket Babylon" is a long-running San Francisco cabaret show featuring song parodies, celebrity impersonations and enormous hats adorned with everything from models of the Eiffel Tower to the entire San Francisco skyline. The sensibility is very gay, the humor very campy. In 1989, "Beach Blanket Babylon's" creator, the late Steve Silver, was enlisted by Oscar producer Allan Carr to whip up a production number. The result was a surreal/gay vision of the Hollywood Canteen, complete with sailor boys dancing with USO girls (or were they USO boys?), Merv Griffin singing "I've Got a Lovely Bunch of Coconuts" and the aforementioned Rob Lowe-Snow White show-stopper. The number prompted a protest from a contingent of Academy members who felt the Oscars had been demeaned.
