English playwright and poet William Shakespeare (1564-1616) is considered by many to be the greatest dramatist the world has ever known and the finest poet who has written in the English language. Shakespeare has also been the world's most popular author. No other writer's plays have been produced so many times or read so widely in so many countries. Much of this popularity rests on his ability to communicate the intricacies of human nature.

This is evidenced in A Midsummer's Night Dream, one of Shakespeare's most famous plays. Though it is a romantic and comic tale of temporarily star-crossed lovers and bewitching fairies, Shakespeare shows us with humor the chaos, confusion and misunderstanding that can ensue when jealousy and egos are not kept in check.
