The extreme pleasure of voting

Spain’s young socialists sure know how to rile up their elders. The youth contingent of Catalonia’s Socialist Party has produced a viral-ready video of a young lady going to the polls and being overcome with sexual excitement. It begins with a sly smirk. Then she’s furiously fanning herself. As she eases her ballot in and out of the voting box, the eye fluttering begins, she looks like she might sneeze and — ooh, ooh, ahhh — her vote is cast. The spot ends with the words, “Voting is a pleasure.”

Other Catalan political parties are not appreciating the whimsy of the ad. Alicia Sanchez-Camacho, head of a conservative opposition party, called it an “attack on the dignity of women,” according to the BBC. Equality Minister Bibiana Aido called it “a misleading advert.” The Convergence and Union coalition called it “filth,” and a spokesperson for the conservative CiU party suggested that the “crude” video might actually keep people from voting. Yeesh, why so uptight? Sounds like they could all stand to cast their ballot, if you know what I’m sayin’. As my colleague Justin Elliot put it, maybe this is “an explanation for the vitality of socialism in Europe.”
