So how's it feel to be proven wrong less than a month later by the exact same polls?

The biggest change came among women under 50.In mid-February, just under half of those voters supported Obama. Now more than six in 10 do while Romney’s support among them has dropped by 14 points, to 30%. The president leads him 2-1 in this group.

Wait, maybe this shift isn't significant at all to the election in November. Let's hear from a Republican strategist:

Republicans’ traditional strength among men “won’t be good enough if we’re losing women by nine points or 10 points,” says Sara Taylor Fagen, a Republican strategist and former political adviser to President George W. Bush. “The focus on contraception has not been a good one for us … and Republicans have unfairly taken on water on this issue.”

So is a retraction forthcoming? Or is Salon too hip for those?

Think Democratic activists, pundits, politicians and the rest should pay close attention to what Linda is saying. (And by the way, I give her high points for courage -- for speaking out here -- for voicing an opinion which runs counter to popular Democratic ground-swell opinion.

The election in November -- in today's wild, volatile, spin-cycle, roller-coaster world -- is still light-years away. Polls change. Almost daily.

Still for all that -- Linda says she thinks that Obama will likely win in November -- and -- at least if I'm reading her correctly -- that he will probably win a majority of women's votes -- but -- doesn't think it will / would necessarily mark a "sea change" -- a new era of women embracing the Democratic Party ..... en mass .... in perpetuity ... so to speak.

My own take ($00.02) ... it appears that something historically momentous is happening but the jury is still out .... might be premature to assume it will be a major "climate shift" .... a long-lasting realignment in gender voting patterns."

"...for a majority of female voters uninflected by race, feminism did not change their beliefs about the legitimate distribution of political power." What in the world does this mean? Why would someone disqualify women of color from poll results as if only white women constitute a true majority?

I will elaborate being that I'm a Democrat. Because there is no "lock step, mindless" following of orders..and numerous complainers and participants in endless intellectual one-upmanship within the ranks of any Democratic group, the only recourse for organizers to take is marketing and demographics. To wow the party faithful into action is done by shocking statistics..y'know brainy stuff that "makes you think." None of the fire-threatening, hell's a coming, ruination that Republicans peddle, no..what works for Democrats is injust disparity amongst some group or other..spoken of in hushed tones at West Hollywood soirees. Yet the Democrats are the best bet for our country if you are reasonably patriotic about the place you call home.

Bullshit. They're trying to pass a law that forces a women to carry her dead baby, "like a cow or a pig." How in the merry mother of crap is that about religion?

Disgusting.

You're a fool not to realize this is about control. Women have the pill and are being told they can be fired if they take it as birth control. Meanwhile, viagra is covered. If it's about morality and religion, when a man can no longer get an erection, it should be considered 'the Lord's will.' That part of his life is just over. Because THAT is the reasoning about trying to get rid of birth control. It's the Lord's will if you get pregnant, when you have sex.

If it's not about control, why aren't the conservatives up in arms about covering Viagra?

If it's about morality and religion, why aren't bills being passed all over the place by conservatives about men masturbating? They're spilling their seed! But it is not happening.

So, don't try to sell that morality crap here. Unless you're against it all, you're a hypocrite. Stop pretending in some puerile manner that you're not. Stop pretending that this is about religion and only religion.

And finally, even if we pretend for five seconds, that it is about religion ... WE LIVE IN A COUNTRY OF RELIGIOUS FREEDOM. Religious freedom does not mean you get special privileges as a Christian. It means you get to practice your religion for yourself and no one stops you or kills you for it. It means that you support the state without a religion because you want to not have any religion predominate. You don't get special attention because of your religion. You get the ability to practice it for yourself. To do that, you have to support the right for everyone else to do that same, in terms of the state.

Get your religion and your beliefs about women away from my body and my life. Quakers pay taxes for war without complaint. You can do the same for an insurance change (a very slight one) that saves everyone money and probably won't affect you at all, since you don't pay for it with taxes.

It would help, of course, if much of this legislation weren't coming from these states. It's not really an unfortunate coincidence or anything that it does.

I live in the South. I know there are people here who don't like this legislation. There just aren't enough of them. (Although, that does seem to be entirely true about the new legislation against women. That seems to be reaching Republican women as well, which is great.)

It's true that stereotyping is wrong. However, without resorting to stereotype at all, we can refer to voting and say, very safely, it's not a good situation.

The reason we can't build a national majority is because, every other election, we have one, for about three or four days, and then, a few years later, the conservatives have one for about three or four days. Truthfully, the real problem we have in building a national majority is very complicated and has very, very little to do with a blanket condescension of the South. It has more to do with regional needs being favored over national ones and/or media persuasion.

Finally, be careful not to accuse someone of stereotyping with a stereotype. :/ I don't think there's a blanket condescension as much as there is a horrified feeling of confusion over why so many people are voting against their own best interests, especially in terms of money and civil liberties. I don't feel like everyone here is stupid, and that's the reason for the crazier stances. They are very afraid, however, of a lot of inexplicable (to me) things. Fear is a great motivator. Hatred is pretty good, too. They don't like the color of Obama's skin.

LInda H It is entirely relevant to remember how far computers have taken us..from reading a newspaper, written at the latest the night before to instantaneous worldwide communication. With that in mind, I have to remind my mother, who gets the same emails, not to be bothered by them even though she is a lifelong Democrat.
1. How would you feel if no one wrote or spoke up about the Limbaugh disgrace?
2. The words of Louis C.K. apply: He was amazed to hear a fellow passenger on a plane complain about his suddenly dropped internet connection. "This is Bul****" the guy said as he flies across the universe, surpassing the dreams of any bird.
3. Politics is repetition..you need to try to reach everyone with the info and we (most people) are notoriously blase about things that matter. So go with it, it's not too much work to hit delete.

“This is Bul****” the guy said as he flies across the universe, surpassing the dreams of any bird.
3. Politics is repetition..you need to try to reach everyone with the info and we (most people) are notoriously blase about things that matter. So go with it, it’s not too much work to hit delete.

Right! Democrats could not win the majority of WHITE women, the key word here is WHITE! Guess what sweety? White women are the only women who vote. Obama has a pretty big advantage in nearly every pole I have seen when it comes to women, ALL WOMEN! If dems getting a minority of white women makes you feel better...enjoy! Good lord what the most nonsensical articles I have ever read.

You cannot be serious. Are you typing this smack to get attention, or do you even pretend to think through your positions?

One of the dumbest things I've read in ages.

Well Duh!! Women aren't a monolithic block like the idiotic Catholics or deluded Obamabots. The ugly truth is that a large number of women actually agree with Rush Limbaugh. Both Right and Left women think their daughters are sluts. Young women would rather go shopping than fight for their rights.

It's a pretty sad situation but women have only been politically independent for a hundred years. It may take another hundred years for them to wise up.

If this is not sarcasm then the author has issues with the topic! We, women of a certain age, spent much of the 1960's fighting for the rights and against the stereotypes that were the by product of centuries of having males control our bodies and destiny!
Now we see the evidence of the women who have taken what we fought for granted and are now confronted with what might be their fate under such paternalistic revision of a right!

It is their choice,,, we won it for them ..We no longer need this protection but they and future women do! I have seen the outrage from many! Think the author might be mistaken to put it lightly! She might want to ask rushbo!

Read above you for a very articulate discussion of polls and the writer who wrote this piece, who apparently can't argue critically and cherry-picked her poll, so that she could write a "shocking" piece, without any thought to the harm it might do or the importance of being a responsible journalist.

That said, it broke my heart, too, at first. Her cavalier attitude made me sick.

Then, I just decided she was a horrific human being and not to be heeded. Her evidence is poor, her logic unsound, her attitude is disrespectful and irresponsible. Who cares what she thinks?
