Stan Lee famously flouted the comics code to do a story about drugs. The comics code history is pretty fascinating altogether--from severe restrictions pre-70s like no-heroes-should-ever-be-defeated to nowadays.

I agree it's probably Weinstein hyping, but at least the subject has come up again. The MPAA is still living in the '50s. (or perhaps the middle ages. Sex is more aghast than murder).

One more thing, the MPAA, Comic Code and the ESRB are not about protecting kids from inappropriate content. The ratings board are about protecting these industries from government control and censorship.

Personally I think we need to rethink the regulation of commercial speech, especially for video games. As for "Bully", this is Harvey Weinstein generating false controversy to sell his film. Shame on all the films supporters for falling for such a transparent scheme.

The movie "Bully" is not as accurate as you think

link

and honestly if you want to talk about bullies, why isn't there any mention of Harvey Weinstein, one of the biggest bullies in Hollywood.

If movie theaters were still the only place to see movies, the controversy over this film's rating might mean something. But the film will soon be available on DVD and streaming video, where the rating won't matter. The MPAA's decision won't stop anyone interested in seeing the film.

It's a typically idealistic choice to make this documentary in the hopes that it will show kids how bad bullying is. It's also typically idealistic to say "kids need to see this movie, it will change them and their parents shouldn't get in the way."

But if kids are what I think they are, most of them won't want to see this movie to learn how to be better people. They will watch to learn how to be better bullies. And they will laugh at the kids in the movie who can't handle it. Whatever the filmmakers intentions, that is the audience who will be watching this movie for decades to come.
