Ohio gov signs bill to get rid of new election law

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Ohio’s governor has signed a bill that repeals a contentious new election law that would shrink early voting opportunities in the presidential battleground state.

The law has been on hold since September. That’s when Democrats and other opponents gathered more than 300,000 signatures from Ohioans to ask voters on fall ballots whether they wanted to repeal it.

The bill that Gov. John Kasich (KAY’-sihk) signed in private on Tuesday would rescind the law. The repeal measure cleared the Republican-controlled Legislature last week.

The state’s top elections official says with the election overhaul’s repeal, there’s no need to put a question before voters in the fall.

But Democrats and others contend the repeal isn’t complete because it doesn’t allow for in-person voting on the final three days before Election Day.
