Ensign aide set for plea agreement hearing

WASHINGTON (AP) — An aide to former Nevada Republican Sen. John Ensign is scheduled to attend a plea agreement hearing on June 7, indicating he has reached a deal with federal prosecutors who had charged him with lobbying the Senate before a one-year ban for former employees elapsed.

The calendar for the U.S. District Court in Washington showed that the June hearing was set on Tuesday, but the U.S. Attorney’s Office and an attorney for the former Ensign aide, Doug Hampton, both declined to discuss details.

Hampton left Ensign’s office after finding out about an affair between his wife and the Nevada senator. Ensign helped Hampton land work as a lobbyist, but the government alleges that Hampton lobbied Ensign and his staff before the one-year period allowed by federal law.
