China seeks closer defense ties with Australia

CANBERRA, Australia (AP) — A senior Chinese official has called for closer defense and economic ties with Australia while warning against a “Cold War mentality” in the United States.

Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Cui Tiankai made a veiled criticism of Australia’s deepening military ties with the United States on Tuesday after attending annual talks on human rights in the Australian capital of Canberra.

Cui told reporters that China and Australia should guard against a resurgence of a Cold War mentality.

Beijing has condemned as a throwback to “Cold War thinking” a plan announced by President Barack Obama in November to send U.S. military aircraft and up to 2,500 Marines to the Australian city of Darwin to create a training hub to help allies and protect American interests across Asia.

  • Many home-remedies are used to minimize the effects of tear gas. This woman has put a milky solution on her face, removing her mask after the tear gas dissipated. Before sunrise, the police came again for another round of teargasing.

  • People capitalize on the uprising -- selling flags, beer, gas masks, sky lanterns and spray paint to name just a few of the popular items.

  • On Monday morning, June 11, the police execute a strong offensive. Many plain-clothed police officers, like the ones seen here, clash with protesters in the side streets away from the main stand-off in Taksim.

  • The authorities seem to be most aggressive in the night, pushing protesters away from the square and park. After being teargassed this young woman catches her breath with other protesters on Siraselviler Street.
