Hackers target GoDaddy, sending millions of sites offline

TechCrunch reports that AnonymousOwn3r, the security leader of the anarchist hacktivist group Anonymous, has claimed sole responsibility for bringing down GoDaddy, the world's largest domain registrar. GoDaddy reached out to users via Twitter, saying, "Update: Still working on it, but we're making progress. Some service has already been restored. Stick with us."

Why is AnonymousOwn3r targeting the provider (who has not been without controversy)? The motives remain unclear, but AnonymousOwn3er tweeted this earlier today:
