Squabble highlights Sunday news shows competition

NEW YORK (AP) — There’s a new competitive era on Sunday morning TV. You can see it by the way CBS’ public affairs show “Face the Nation” has gotten under the skin of its rivals at NBC’s “Meet the Press.”

NBC accuses CBS of some trickery in the Nielsen ratings and in scheduling designed to make its show seem more popular than it actually is. CBS detects the aroma of sour grapes.

David Gregory’s “Meet the Press” and Bob Schieffer’s “Face the Nation” have been running neck and neck in the ratings this year, with ABC’s “This Week” with George Stephanopoulos coming on strong, too.

NBC used to be the unquestioned leader in the Tim Russert era, but Schieffer says dominance is now determined by who has the best guests each week.
