Louis C.K. taking hiatus from "Louie": "I want it to stay funny"

The comic will take a break between seasons three and four of his Emmy-winning comedy

Fans have yet another reason to appreciate the Emmy-winning stand-up comic Louis C.K.: He's taking a year-long hiatus from his comedy "Louie" -- which he writes, produces, directs, edits and stars in -- to make sure it stays funny and meaningful. "The last three seasons have been a surge of fun stories, and it's been great to share all the stuff, and I want the show to keep getting better," Louis C.K. said on a press call this morning. "I want it to keep being something that comes from somewhere fun and important."

FX Networks President and General Manager John Landgraf, also on the call, seemed to be supportive. "Louis will do whatever he wants to do," Landgraf said.

C.K. is taking the year to finish his current 22-city tour, and in 2013, he will shift back to the show. "I usually start shooting in March for a June launch and we'll start September or October for a May launch," he said. "I used to shoot, promote and edit all at the same time in June, and I think I can do better work if I spread things out." The show will air in May 2014.

It's not clear whether the comic has anything specific in mind for the new season -- except that it will be new. "I want season four to go somewhere new … I'm looking back to when I did the first season and the time I took to do the show and decide which directions to go in, and I want that back again," he said.
