Death toll in Kenya police deaths at least 26

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — A Kenyan official says the death toll from an ambush on a group of police officers has risen to 26, with two other officers missing.

The police officer said 26 bodies have been recovered from the Baragoi region of northwestern Kenya. The police were killed over the weekend after being ambushed by bandits from the Turkana region who are suspected to have stolen another tribe’s cattle. The police officer spoke on condition he wasn’t identified because he is not allowed to speak to reporters.

The region where the killings took place, the Suguta Valley, is far removed from modern society. Roads and communications are bad, and few security officers are stationed there.

The bodies of the police were being flown back to the capital, Nairobi, on Monday.
