Ghana opposition meets to discuss loss

ACCRA, Ghana (AP) — Ghana’s opposition met to discuss whether to accept the results of the recent presidential and parliamentary elections, which handed victory to the ruling party.

The opposition New Patriotic Party said in a draft statement sent to reporters late Sunday that they would contest the results because of allegations of vote rigging. But soon after party leaders issued the statement, they sent an email to reporters rescinding it.

It remains unclear if the NPP plans to challenge the results, which gave 50.7 percent of the vote to incumbent John Dramani Mahama. Opposition leader Nana Akufo-Addo came in second with 47.7 percent.

Party spokeswoman Oboshie Sai said they plan to issue a statement Tuesday.

  • People capitalize on the uprising -- selling flags, beer, gas masks, sky lanterns and spray paint to name just a few of the popular items.

  • On Monday morning, June 11, the police execute a strong offensive. Many plain-clothed police officers, like the ones seen here, clash with protesters in the side streets away from the main stand-off in Taksim.

  • The authorities seem to be most aggressive in the night, pushing protesters away from the square and park. After being teargassed this young woman catches her breath with other protesters on Siraselviler Street.
