3 dead, 11 hurt after man crashes at Guam resort

HAGATNA, Guam (AP) — Three people were killed and 11 injured after a man crashed a car into a convenience store at a Guam resort, then got out and began stabbing those around him, police said.

The wreck and alleged knife attack Monday night at a shopping area at the Outrigger Guam Resort sent frightened hotel guests fleeing for safety, the Pacific Daily News in Hagatna reported Tuesday (http://goo.gl/8qxzk). Fire officials say a total of 14 people were taken to Guam Memorial Hospital.

Guam Police Chief Fred Bordallo said at a news conference early Tuesday that authorities had a suspect, described as a “young adult male,” in custody. No additional details about the investigation were released.

A woman at a nearby café with friends told the newspaper that she saw the car plow through the driveway and into an ABC Store fronting the resort. Ashley Quichocho, 18, of Dededo says the driver got out, ran up to bystanders and began stabbing them.

“He started stabbing someone, and I started freaking out,” Quichocho said. “He was just running back and forth stabbing people.”

Quichocho said she ran to the second floor of the hotel with other guests to escape.

Guam Gov. Eddie Calvo said the U.S. territory is working with the Japanese Consulate to provide support and assistance to the families of victims.

The resort is at Guam’s Tumon Bay, which includes a shopping center with retailers and restaurants. ABC Stores is a chain of convenience stores based in Honolulu.
