WASHINGTON (AP) — Israel’s ambassador to the U.S. is stepping down after more than four years on the job.

Michael Oren says he’ll finish his term this fall. The Israeli Embassy in Washington is not commenting on who will replace Oren or when a replacement will be named.

Oren says in a statement that representing the Jewish state in Washington have been challenging. But he says it was a privilege to forge even firmer bonds between two countries he says have always enjoyed a special relationship.

He says he’ll continue serving Israel in hopes of strengthening its alliance with the U.S.

Oren is an academic who taught at several American universities. H was born in upstate New York but moved to Israel in 1979 and enlisted in the paratroopers brigade.
