Disney Channel features same-sex couple for the first time

"Good Luck Charlie" introduces a lesbian couple

In what GLAAD has called a "big step forward," the Disney Channel has introduced its viewers to a same-sex couple for the first time ever.

The following clip, from family sitcom "Good Luck Charlie," features parents Amy and Bob Duncan and preschool-aged daughter Charlie, who are preparing for a playdate with Taylor and her parents. After confusion about who Taylor's mom is ("Susan!" exclaims Amy, "Cheryl!" insists Bob) they discover that Taylor has two moms -- a fact they accept with mild surprise.

Although Jezebel's Kelly Faircloth scoffs that "it's strange in this day and age to see lesbian parents treated as a little exotic," it's nice that Disney has finally acknowledged the diversity of some of its viewers. And for many children, this clip might be their first exposure to same-sex couples.
