At 5:30 a.m. on Saturday, two maximum-security prisoners at the Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, New York were found to have escaped from their jail cells. They are still at-large.

The two escapees are David Sweat, 35, who is serving life without the possibility of parole for shooting a deputy sheriff 22 times and running him over with a car until he died, and Richard Matt, 49, who is serving 25-to-life for murdering and dismembering a man.

On Monday evening's edition of "The Rachel Maddow Show," Maddow gave a Stephen King-worthy recap of past high-profile prisoner escapes (and their eventual re-captures), before laying out what we know about this one.

"The focus in Dannemora now is figuring out how they got out. There's also the rather pressing question of whether or not they had help. A female employee who worked inside the prison might have been involved somehow in the escape effort," Maddow explained. "Job one is finding them. If past is prologue, they will be found. It's just a question of when."
