Hours after the New England Patriots humiliated the Dallas Cowboys, a fight between two men escalated to gunplay when one of the men -- after reportedly being "egged on" by the crowd -- shot the other in the head.
Off-duty Arlington police working security were responding to a brawl among tailgaters after the game when they heard a shot fired. Paramedics airlifted the victim to the a local hospital with what were described as life-threatening injuries. The shooter was captured while trying to escape after tripping over a retaining wall.
According to witness Greg Miller, "it started as a fight between a couple of guys, next thing you know, a few guys jumped in and it was a big brawl. I looked up, and I saw one of my buddies trying to get a girl out from under the pile. One guy walks up to him, puts a gun up to his head. The guy let my friend go, and I grab him so we can leave -- I turn my back, and I heard gunshots."
Another witness, Lester Peters, said that when the gunman first put a gun to the victim's head, "I didn't think he was going to pull the trigger."
Cowboy's spokesperson Joe Trahan insisted that all vehicles "within the stadium's secured parking perimeter are subject to a security inspection before being allowed to park," and that weapons are prohibited on the premises. However, cars immediately adjacent to the stadium lots are not subject to search.
