Dean Koontz

"False Memory"

Published October 5, 2000 7:00PM (EDT)

As a senior in college, Dean Koontz won an Atlantic Monthly fiction competition and has been writing ever since. His books are published in 38 languages; seven of his novels have risen to number one on the New York Times hardcover bestseller list (Lightning, Midnight, Cold Fire, Hideaway, Dragon Tears, Intensity, and Sole Survivor).

In his latest novel "False Memory," Koontz creates once again atmospheric settings, believable characters, and all-too-plausible situations through which he explores the terror that we all suspect lurks just out of sight in our ordinary lives. He weaves a tale of madness, suspense, love, and terror from a startling and true-life psychological condition so close to home it will stun even his most seasoned readers: autophobia--fear of oneself.

Koontz explains his prolific output as follows: "When other novelists ask me how I avoid writer's block, which has never afflicted me, I answer that self-doubt is the cause of all blocks, that I have more self-doubt than any writer I know, but that the trick is to embrace this demonic imp and cherish it."
