England's decadent delights

In Douglas Cruickshank's essay from "Salon.com's Wanderlust," he samples the good life with Mariah Carey, clay pigeons and single malt scotches at a luxurious English castle hotel.

"Salon.com's Wanderlust: Real-life Tales of Adventure and Romance," the new collection of travel essays edited by Don George, is dedicated to putting the romance and passion -- the "unconquerable longing" -- back into travel writing. In this excerpt from his essay "England's decadent delights," Douglas Cruickshank talks about shooting skeet (and missing the pucks by a country mile) while chilling out with the rich and famous at Stapleford Park, an impossibly pastoral estate in the English countryside.

Douglas Cruickshank is the editor of the People site on Salon.com.
