"He's at a much higher level now," Weir told Salon Books. "There's no interference from ego. He comes from a place of higher vision. There's no drugs up there." Weir, a 49-year-old Californian who works on various children's-aid and environmental projects, reaches Garcia's oversoul through meditation. (An oversoul, as defined in the book's glossary, is "an advanced spiritual being or expression of All That Is who exists in the higher spiritual dimensions.")

According to Weir, she tried to contact the late Garcia several times before he replied. After a few successful attempts, Garcia's oversoul became more comfortable with her, and they developed the current reciprocal relationship in which he contacts her. The two now talk on a regular basis: "I enter a state of peace. I raise my energy, and then I can open my eyes." At that point she can write down what Garcia tells her. Though their conversations can go for hours, Weir says, Garcia senses when she is tired and then ends the discussion.

Though Weir's book doesn't reveal many specifics of their conversations, it does pass on some wisdom from the singer and guitarist: "Be Open. Do not limit yourself. Gifts come in many forms. Do not judge them, as you say, by the wrapping." Weir, who started her psychic training when she was 29, reports that she also speaks to some of her deceased pets, as well as to flowers and trees.
