Exclusive Daily Download: "Pride & Fight," Animal Collective
This lengthy track comes from "Hollinndagain," a live Animal Collective recording from 2001 that was originally released in a limited edition of just 300 copies, but is now getting a proper rerelease through their Paw Tracks label. This was before the band had started stealthily sneaking pop song structures into their hazy sonic morass, and a first impression may be one of meaningless amorphousness. Spend a while with this band's music, even at its most abstract, though, and you're likely to be won over by the internal logic of their explorations and by a structured sense of play that is rarely attempted in music, and even more rarely achieved without hokeyness.
