Daily Download: “Popeye the Sailor Man,” Al Dollar and His Ten Cent Band
A wretched movie and a legal squabble that made many of his classic cartoons unavailable may have put the kibosh on Popeye’s present-day popularity, but the spinach-eating sailor was the bee’s knees back in 1931 when this song was recorded. Aside from the goofy lyrics about Popeye and his “goyle Olive Oyl,” the song benefits from a nicely swinging performance and a charming vocal performance from singer Billy Murray — who was featured in this spot with a different track last week.
