What is a podcast?
Here's an analogy: Podcasting is to web audio as Tivo is to TV -- it allows you to subscribe to certain podcast, download new episodes as they come out and then listen to them when you want. A podcast itself is any kind of audio program that you can download to your computer or mp3 player. Podcasting, as a phenomenon, is basically the intersection of MP3 files and RSS feeds: Using simple software (like iTunes or iPodder, see below), you subscribe to certain shows, and your podcasting software lets you know when they're available and automatically downloads them for you.
What do I need to listen to a podcast?
You can listen to Salon's podcasts one of two ways: You can just click on the MP3 link to download the song and listen to it on your computer as you would any audio file. Or, you can subscribe to the podcast -- meaning you'll automatically get new episodes of the podcast as they're published -- by installing and using podcasting software, if you don't already have it. Here are some of the more popular (and free) programs:

How do I subscribe?
To subscribe using iTunes, click on the iTunes link and it will automatically add a Salon podcast to your list of subscriptions; for any podcasting software, copy the address of the feed and paste it into the "subscribe" field of your software. How do I listen?
To listen to a podcast once you've subscribed, just open your podcasting program, find the podcast in your subscription list and press play.
