SALON'S TV PICKS FOR
TUESDAY, JAN. 12, 1999
BY JOYCE MILLMAN

S E R I E S

Don't dial 911: Hank, Dale and Boomhauer join the volunteer fire department on a new King of the Hill (8 p.m., Fox). Nova (check local times, PBS) presents "The Beast of Loch Ness," which follows an expedition (led by a pair of veteran monster chasers) to Scotland in hopes of confirming the existence of Nessie or debunking her once and for all. On a new Buffy the Vampire Slayer (8 p.m., WB), Buffy's mom loses it and leads a town witch hunt against all things occult -- including her daughter. Eddie Murphy's animated series The Pjs (8:30 p.m., Fox) moves into its regular time slot. Cheap laughs at the expense of projects dwellers. On Will & Grace (9:30 p.m., NBC), Will spends a miserable birthday at a skating exhibition with ice groupies Grace and Jack. Rudy Galindo has a cameo. The Frontline (check local times, PBS) documentary "Snitch" looks at how legislation dictating mandatory minimum sentencing in drug cases has affected the criminal justice system. On NYPD Blue (10 p.m., ABC), Diane seeks help in dealing with her grief. We were wondering when the writers were finally going to get around to this. Also, Sipowicz and Sorenson are embroiled in a high profile homicide case. In case you missed it Sunday or Monday, here's another chance to catch the premiere episode of The Sopranos (11 p.m., HBO). Don't mean to be a nag, but you really should watch this.
