WEEKEND, MARCH 12-14, 1999
BY JOYCE MILLMAN

S E R I E S

What's better than one episode of "Behind the Music"? An entire weekend of episodes of "Behind the Music" (beginning 6 a.m. Sat., VH1).The bio-fest ends with a new profile of Iggy Pop (9 p.m., Sun.). Hold all my calls. Saturday Night Live (11:30 p.m. Sat., NBC) is new this week; Ray Romano hosts, with music from the Corrs. The kids go to see a new movie called "Star Wars" on the season finale of That '70s Show (8:30 p.m. Sun., Fox). The X-Files (9 p.m. Sun., Fox) reruns the nifty two-parter in which Mulder ends up inside the body of a loutish Area 51 official (Michael McKean), and vice versa. On The Sopranos (9 p.m. Sun., HBO), Tony's record-producer friend Hesh has a misunderstanding with a rapper. The new alien invasion series First Wave (9 p.m. Sun., USA), which is premiering Friday on the Sci-Fi Channel, gets a sneak preview on Sci-Fi's parent network. It's not the pilot episode, though, so get ready to be confused. Following "First Wave," there's a sneak of Farscape (10 p.m. Sun., USA), which also premieres Friday on the Sci-Fi Channel. This is a straight-ahead space saga in which an American astronaut gets launched into a galaxy far, far away during a space mission mishap. The special effects from Jim Henson's Creature Shop are way cool. On The Practice (10 p.m. Sun., ABC), Eugene's ex-wife sues for sole custody of Kenny.

S P E C I A L S

Geraldo Rivera hosts Back to Bedlam (9 p.m. Fri., NBC), an NBC News special about the criminalization of the mentally ill. Danny DeVito's 1996 adaptation of Roald Dahl's Matilda (7 p.m. Sun., ABC) has its network TV premiere. Mara Wilson stars as the superintelligent girl who gets revenge on her uncaring parents. Schindler's List (7:30 p.m. Sun., NBC) has another showing, presented with only two commercial interruptions. Last time around, there were no commercials. Liam Neeson stars in Steven Spielberg's Academy Award-winning Holocaust drama. The documentary Cleopatra's Palace: In Search of a Legend (9 p.m. Sun., Discovery Channel) goes on an underwater archaeological expedition to explore the ruins of what's believed to be the queen of the Nile's humble abode.
