Beyond the Multiplex

My Winona, your Winona, our Winona

In this week's Beyond the Multiplex/IFC video, Matt Singer and I explore the unsatisfying post-arrest career of one-time indie goddess Winona Ryder. Much has changed since the "Edward Scissorhands"-"Age of Innocence"-"Reality Bites" apex of her stardom. Despite a sly, agreeable voice-over role in "A Scanner Darkly," Ryder hasn't quite seemed to rebound from her 2002 conviction for grand theft and vandalism after shoplifting from a Saks Fifth Avenue store in Beverly Hills, Calif.

We think the time is right. Ryder's only 36, and she has several upcoming films on the docket, including the new "Sex and Death 101" (opening next week), which reunites her with "Heathers" screenwriter Daniel Waters. Many less likable celebrities have come back from far worse scandals. We believe in Winona. (At the end of the video you'll hear my Winona Ryder Key-lime-pie story, which everybody who knows me personally has already heard four or five times.)

Cannes opens with a dud -- but delights follow
"Blindness" is an apocalyptic horror flick, rendered dull and pretentious. But an astonishing animated war film and a gripping prison drama provide the fireworks.
Yes we Cannes!
Indiana Jones meets art cinema as the world's leading festival offers its most exciting lineup in years.
In-flight reading
I'm en route to Cannes, to watch movies, drink wine and blog like crazy. Poor me!
If Austin Powers were French -- and funny
He might be the star of "OSS 117," a deadpan, borderline-brilliant satire of postwar spy movies and preening Euro-idiocy in the Middle East.
