In this week's Beyond the Multiplex/IFC video, Matt Singer and I explore the unsatisfying post-arrest career of one-time indie goddess Winona Ryder. Much has changed since the "Edward Scissorhands"-"Age of Innocence"-"Reality Bites" apex of her stardom. Despite a sly, agreeable voice-over role in "A Scanner Darkly," Ryder hasn't quite seemed to rebound from her 2002 conviction for grand theft and vandalism after shoplifting from a Saks Fifth Avenue store in Beverly Hills, Calif.

We think the time is right. Ryder's only 36, and she has several upcoming films on the docket, including the new "Sex and Death 101" (opening next week), which reunites her with "Heathers" screenwriter Daniel Waters. Many less likable celebrities have come back from far worse scandals. We believe in Winona.
