Series

The sci-fi series Sliders (9 p.m. Fri., Sci-Fi Channel) starts its new season with newcomer Robert Floyd replacing departed star Jerry O'Connell. On a rerun of The X-Files (9 p.m. Sun., Fox), Mulder and Scully go undercover (hilariously) as married couple Rob and Laura Petrie to probe a suburban community where the residents seem a tad overly concerned with curb appeal. On Sex and the City (9 p.m. Sun., HBO), Carrie unwisely counsels a friend to leave her husband, and Samantha is at the breaking point over her lover's shortcomings. A new Behind the Music (9 p.m. Sun., VH1) looks at the ups and downs of Eric Burdon, who fronted the '60s group the Animals. The Practice (10 p.m. Sun., ABC) reruns the episode where the firm is sued for defamation by a figure in the George Vogelman decapitation case. Tony Danza guests. The cable series Linc's (10:35 p.m. Sun., Showtime) begins its second season. Pam Grier and Steven Williams star in this comedy drama set in a bar in Washington.

Specials

Suzanne Somers hosts the Latin DanceSport Championship (8 p.m. Sat., NBC), which is kind of like extreme ballroom dancing. It's going to be a long summer. The new Eddie Izzard: Dress to Kill (11:30 p.m. Sat., HBO) finds the cross-dressing British comedian holding forth in a one-person show. Julianne Moore hosts the American Fashion Awards (9 p.m. Sun., E!), which marks the first time in its 18-year history that the gala has been nationally televised. Sophia Loren and Cher receive special awards; presenters include Martha Stewart and Bette Midler. The two-hour documentary Showgirl Stories (9 p.m. Sun., The Learning Channel) chronicles the history of scantily clad dancing girls from the Ziegfield Follies to the Vegas strip. Anjelica Huston narrates.
