The new dramatic anthology series PBS Hollywood Presents (8 p.m., PBS, check local listings) kicks off with an adaptation of "The Old Settler," a 1997 play set in 1940s Harlem, starring Phylicia Rashad and Debbie Allen as sisters engaged in a grudge match. On a new episode of The West Wing (9 p.m., NBC), Bartlet questions a new White House counsel (Oliver Platt) about the possible criminal implications of his keeping his medical condition a secret from voters. On Once and Again (10 p.m., ABC), plans for the Sammlers and the Mannings to consolidate households are complicated by the volatile Carla and her effect on Eli. On That's My Bush! (10:30 p.m., Comedy Central), a psychic's ominous prediction prompts George to ban all guns, which earns him a visit from a peeved "Charlton Heston."

George Carlin receives a Lifetime Achievement Award on the 15th annual American Comedy Awards (8 p.m., Comedy Central), which honors the funniest performers, TV shows and movies from the past year. Ray Romano, Darrell Hammond and Garry Shandling are among the presenters. Jodie Foster seeks extraterrestrial life, but has a spiritual awakening instead, in the network premiere of Contact (8 p.m., CBS), a 1997 drama directed by Robert Zemeckis.
