Song of the Day: "Everybody's Got Their Own Part to Play," Shannon Wright

Shannon Wright serves up some Lennon-inspired piano pop.

Apr. 26, 2007 | Shannon WrightWith "Everybody's Got Their Own Part to Play," Florida singer-songwriter Shannon Wright comes this close to pulling a fast one on us. The piano part galloping through the song has such a jaunty, bouncy feel, it very nearly obscures the meaning of Wright's bleak, accusatory lyrics ("You shoulda known better/ To ask for something you wouldn't get"). But such trickery is fair game in pop music -- to paraphrase John Lennon (whose influence is all over this track), sometimes it takes a sugar coating for listeners to swallow a bitter pill.
