SALON'S TV PICKS FOR
WEDNESDAY, OCT. 29, 1997
BY JOYCE MILLMAN

S E R I E S

Oliver North is profiled on a new Biography (8 p.m. EST/9 PST, A&E). Corky spoils a post-operative Murphy with TLC on Murphy Brown (8:30 p.m., CBS). Charlie's troubled ex, Kirsten, returns on Party of Five (9 p.m., Fox). The Solomons celebrate Halloween as only they can on 3rd Rock from the Sun (9 p.m., NBC). On Ellen (9:30 p.m., ABC), our gal finally gets some action on a date with her mortgage broker. Stacy Edwards of the film "In the Company of Men" joins the cast of Chicago Hope (10 p.m., CBS) as a neurosurgeon whose presence threatens Shutt. South Park (10 p.m., Comedy Central) has a new episode. It's Halloween, the kids have pinkeye and Kenny has an unfortunate mishap with a falling Russian space station.

S P E C I A L S

How many times did you wish, while watching "thirtysomething," that Timothy Busfield would get run over by a truck? Tonight, it just might happen. Busfield plays a gas-station owner imperiled by bloodthirsty, driverless semis in the new cable movie Trucks (9 p.m., USA). Yes, it's based on an old Stephen King story.

T A L K

Whitney Houston, Brandy Norwood and Bernadette Peters plug the upcoming ABC production of "Cinderella" on Rosie O'Donnell (syndicated); Ellen Barkin guests on David Letterman (CBS); the Cure perform on Jay Leno (NBC); scheduled guests on Charlie Rose (PBS) include Molly Ringwald and Indianapolis Mayor Stephen Goldsmith; Tom Snyder (CBS) talks with Carl Reiner and Mel Brooks; Tim Curry and Doris Kearns Goodwin are panelists on Politically Incorrect (ABC); Conan O'Brien (NBC) features Martha Stewart.

E T C.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, members of the Church of Scientology are mounting a telephone assault on Fox and the producers of Millennium over an upcoming episode in which Frank Black investigates a murder tied to a New Age-y religion called "Selfosophy." The more comical than usual (for "Millennium") episode features the return of Jose Chung (Charles Nelson Reilly), the Truman Capote-ish author who was last seen on "The X-Files" a couple of seasons ago researching a "nonfiction science fiction" novel about Mulder and Scully.
