SALON'S TV PICKS FOR
THURSDAY, OCT. 30, 1997
BY JOYCE MILLMAN

S P E C I A L S

A four-hour Nick at Nite Halloween Marathon (beginning 8:30 p.m.) reels out holiday-themed episodes of "Happy Days," "The Munsters," "The Odd Couple" (the one where Felix hires an exorcist when he thinks the air conditioner is haunted), "The Dick Van Dyke Show," "The Addams Family" and "Newhart" (the "War of the Worlds" spoof). More Halloween programming: Village of the Damned (8 p.m., ABC) stars Kirstie Alley and Christopher Reeve (his last screen role before his accident) in John Carpenter's 1995 horror flick about a town terrorized by satanic tykes.

S E R I E S

Joey and Chandler are in love with the same woman on Friends (8 p.m., NBC). On Seinfeld (9 p.m., NBC), Jerry gets a van and George thinks his parents are avoiding him. Greene confronts the person he believes is responsible for his beating on ER (10 p.m., NBC). 20/20 (10 p.m., ABC) has reports on colon cancer and a car repair safety hazard.

T A L K

David Letterman (CBS) welcomes David Hyde Pierce; John Travolta and Salt-N-Pepa guest on Jay Leno (NBC); scheduled guests on Charlie Rose (PBS) include playwright Neil Simon and photographer Francesco Scavullo; Tom Snyder (CBS) talks with Bill Maher; Cindy Crawford joins Maher on Politically Incorrect (ABC); Keenen Ivory Wayans (syndicated) hosts his brother Damon.

E T C.

Fox has decided that its November sweeps special Prisoners out of Control, which consists of prison surveillance camera footage, is too graphic to air and has pulled it off the Nov. 4 schedule. Don't despair, though -- Fox is still airing The World's Scariest Police Chases 3 that night and Cheating Death: Catastrophes Caught on Tape on Nov. 6.
