SALON'S TV PICKS FOR
HOLIDAY WEEKEND, NOV. 26-30, 1997
BY JOYCE MILLMAN

W E D N E S D A Y

It's the night before Thanksgiving. You're cleaning. You're cooking. You need a break. Plant the kids in front of a three-and-a-half hour Rugrats marathon (5 p.m., Nickelodeon) and don't feel guilty about it. Basketball: Heat at Magic (8 p.m., TBS); Kings at Clippers (10:30 p.m., TBS). On Ellen (9:30 p.m., ABC), Laurie wants to take their relationship to a whole new level and Ellen is nervous. More TV ground will be broken. Give thanks for "Ellen" around your table tomorrow.

Talk: Rosie O'Donnell (syndicated): Sigourney Weaver; David Letterman (CBS): Anthony Edwards, Stupid Pet Tricks; Charlie Rose (PBS): AIDS researcher Dr. David Ho; Jay Leno (NBC): A kids' Thanksgiving pageant; Politically Incorrect (ABC): Hector Elizondo, Sarah Silverman; Conan O'Brien (NBC): Nathan Lane, Al Sharpton, Todd Rundgren.

T H A N K S G I V I N G+ D A Y

Parades -- without them, it's just Thursday: The All American Thanksgiving Parade (check local times, CBS); Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade (check local times, NBC).

Football: Bears at Lions (12:30 p.m., Fox); Oilers at Cowboys (4 p.m., NBC).

Marathons: A 12-hour X-Files Viewers' Choice Marathon (noon, F/X) unspools Mulder and Scully's greatest hits, as chosen by a TV Guide poll. Viewers can still vote until noon EST on Wednesday, Nov. 26, by phone (900-TV-GUIDE) or on the Web, but you'll need the code numbers from last week's TV Guide (the one with Chris Carter, David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson on the cover). There's a 16-flick Bob Hope marathon (6 a.m., American Movie Classics), which includes six "Road" movies. And there's a nine-hour Saturday Night Live marathon (11 a.m., Comedy Central). Hosts include Candice Bergen, Woody Harrelson and Pee-wee Herman (2 p.m.).

Heartwarming programming: Gather the kids around for the traditional Thanksgiving night showing of Jurassic Park (8:30 p.m., NBC), NBC's little gift to families everywhere.

Talk: Rosie O'Donnell (syndicated): Elton John (rerun); David Letterman (CBS): Kevin Spacey, the Wallflowers; Charlie Rose (PBS): Placido Domingo; Jay Leno (NBC): Helena Bonham Carter; Politically Incorrect (ABC):Chris Rock, Peter Strauss; Conan O'Brien (NBC): Scott Thompson.

More marathons: Slack off on the couch all day, eating leftovers and crying over Angela's misguided love for Jordan Catalano; yes, it's an 11-hour My So-Called Life marathon (8 a.m., MTV). And Patsy and Eddie rise again in a 16-hour AbFab marathon (noon, Comedy Central).

Ice skating: For some reason, the tube is full of it tonight. And it's even cheesier than usual. Ekaterina Gordeeva and her little daughter star in the special Snowden on Ice (8 p.m., CBS), a musical fantasy (uh-oh) featuring the tunes of Amy Grant, Kenny Rogers and Olivia Newton-John (double uh-oh) and a special appearance by Snowden, the lovable Target stores holiday advertising tool! Airing opposite this shameless ploy for your Christmas shopping bucks, we have Skate International of Canada (8 p.m., Fox), a rather moldy competition (it was taped Nov. 3) featuring Michelle Kwan, Tara Lipinski, Elvis Stojko, Todd Eldredge, Grishuk and Platov and other Olympic hopefuls. Then, it's Ice Wars: USA vs. The World (9 p.m., CBS). Do not be alarmed! U.N. inspectors were on site to make sure no illegal spins were used.

Specials: Paul McCartney, Sting, Eric Clapton, Elton John and others perform from the Royal Albert Hall in The All-Star Concert for Montserrat (9 p.m., Showtime). And a grateful nation says farewell to the duo who made "heh-heh heh-heh" a household phrase with Beavis and Butt-head Are Dead (10 p.m., MTV), the last first-run episode of Mike Judge's influential series. In this finale, a rumor sweeps through Highland High that the boys have bought it, and everyone from Principal McVicker to Daria reflect on what B&B meant to them.

Talk: Rosie O'Donnell (syndicated): Michael Jordan (rerun); David Letterman (CBS): John Witherspoon; Jay Leno (NBC): Unavailable at press time; Politically Incorrect (ABC): Chris Farley, Kathy Ireland; Conan O'Brien (NBC): Mary Tyler Moore, Ric Ocasek; Chris Rock (HBO): George Carlin.

S A T U R D A Y

There's no rest for Michelle, Tara, Elvis, Todd and the rest of the gang; they're at it again in Skate International of France (8 p.m., Fox). The 1995 film spinoff The Brady Bunch Movie (8 p.m., NBC) has its first network airing. You will not be disappointed. On The Practice (10 p.m., ABC), Eugene regrets defending a child killer and Bobby co-chairs a case with his mentor, who is having memory problems. Guests include James Whitmore, Ken Howard, Bonnie Bartlett and Titus Welliver.

S U N D A Y

Football: 49ers at Chiefs or regional action (1 p.m., Fox); Jets at Buffalo or regional action (1 p.m., NBC); Steelers at Cardinals or regional action (4 p.m., NBC); Broncos at Chargers (8 p.m., ESPN).

Figure skating: Skate International of Russia (5:30 p.m., Fox). Please, make them stop!

Highlights: The murdered fashion designer is profiled in Versace: The E! True Hollywood Story (8 p.m., E!). The documentary Midnight in Savannah (8 p.m. EST/9 PST, A&E) looks at the murder case on which the book and movie "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil" is based. David Halberstam's bestseller The Fifties (9 p.m. EST/10 PST, The History Channel) becomes a seven-part documentary series. Part 1, "The Fear and the Dream," looks at middle-class America in the postwar years. The X-Files (9 p.m., Fox) has a black-and-white, old-Hollywood-style "Frankenstein" episode with comic overtones; how could it not have comic overtones with J. Peterman of "Seinfeld" cast as the mad scientist? Sherry Stringfield hosts Shoot the Clock: Fitting Your Life Into Your Life (10 p.m., Lifetime), about women stressed-out by work and family demands.

Have a blue Thanksgiving. See you Monday.
