SALON'S TV PICKS FOR
MONDAY, DEC. 15, 1997
BY JOYCE MILLMAN

S P E C I A L S

Polar bears -- they ain't cuddly. That's the gist of the nature special Polar Bears: Arctic Terror (8 p.m. EST/10 PST, ABC), which is a rerun. There's also another airing of Town Hall (10 p.m., Comedy Central), a round-table discussion of the events of 1997 moderated by Richard Belzer (the guest star of 1997), with panelists Arianna Huffington, Beth Littleford, A. Whitney Brown, Jonathan Katz and others. The five-part documentary series When the Century Was Young (9 p.m. EST/10 PST, History Channel) chronicles the early 1900s.

S P O R T S

Monday Night Football: Broncos at 49ers (9 p.m., ABC).

S E R I E S

Psychic Edgar Cayce is the subject of a new Biography (8 p.m. EST/9 PST, A&E). The Ally-Billy-Georgia triangle heats up on Ally McBeal (9 p.m., Fox). Buffy the Vampire Slayer (9 p.m., WB) reruns the episode where Cordelia almost becomes an unwilling organ donor. Raymond is frustrated in his attempts to sneak in a little quality time with Debra during the holidays on Everybody Loves Raymond (9:30 p.m., CBS). Dateline NBC (10 p.m., NBC) looks at a North Carolina civil case in which a first wife sued a second wife and won a $1 million judgment.

T A L K

Rosie O'Donnell (syndicated) welcomes Kevin Costner; Kev continues plugging that dreary-looking "Postman" movie on David Letterman (CBS); Jay Leno (NBC) hosts Daisy Fuentes and Maestro Harrell; Tom Snyder (CBS) talks with Nathan Lane; Politically Incorrect (ABC) has a rerun with Ben Stein and Kitty Kelley; a rerun of Conan O'Brien (NBC) features Whoopi Goldberg and Simply Red.

E T C.

CBS will premiere the new sitcom Style and Substance, starring Jean "Designing Women" Smart and Nancy "Facts of Life" McKeon, on Monday, Jan. 5. Smart plays a Martha Stewart-type celebrity who is tutored in the art of being human by her down-to-earth assistant, played by McKeon. If you're thinking "Veronica's Closet" meets "Fired Up," pat yourself on the back ... Starting Jan. 23, Fox tries yet another supernatural series in the doomed 8 p.m. Friday slot. Beyond Belief, a reality series about "the unexplained," which aired on Fox over the summer, is the lucky victim ... It Was Inevitable Dept.: Ted Danson will be reunited with his Cheers co-star Kirstie Alley on an episode of Veronica's Closet, which will air during February 1998 sweeps. In the episode, Veronica (Alley) and an old boyfriend (Danson) rekindle the flame just as her divorce is about to become final. Rumor has it that this may be the episode where Veronica finally gets some action, nudge-nudge, wink-wink.
