SALON'S TV PICKS FOR
MONDAY, JAN. 19, 1998
BY JOYCE MILLMAN

S E R I E S

A new profile of Martin Luther King Jr. airs on his holiday on Biography (8 p.m. EST/ 9 PST, A&E). Turns out, the male model isn't brainy enough for Ally on Ally McBeal (9 p.m., Fox). Buffy the Vampire Slayer (9 p.m., WB) begins a pivotal two-part episode in which Buffy gets what she wants for her birthday -- Angel -- but there's a major downside. Part two airs in the show's new time slot Tuesday. Brooklyn South (10 p.m., CBS) finally gives Officer Johnson (Richard T. Jones), the only male African-American in the cast, something to do. Jimmy's cancer cluster case goes to trial on The Practice (10 p.m., ABC). The American Experience (check local times, PBS) looks at the life of Maine midwife Martha Ballard, whose diaries, covering her practice from 1785-1812, formed the basis for historian Laurel Thatcher Ulrich's 1990 Pulitzer Prize-winning biography.

S P O R T S

College hoops: Connecticut at St. John's (7:30 p.m., ESPN); Kansas at Missouri (9:30 p.m., ESPN); Texas Christian at Hawaii (Midnight, ESPN).

S P E C I A L S

The conclusion of the documentary California and the Dream Seekers (9 p.m. EST/10 PST, A&E) focuses on natural wonders like Yosemite and man-made wonders like Hollywood. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame: Class of '98 (9 p.m., VH1) features highlights from last week's induction ceremony. Fleetwood Mac, the Eagles, Santana and others perform.

T A L K

Rosie O'Donnell (syndicated) hosts Gloria Reuben; David Letterman (CBS) reruns segments with Alec Baldwin and Billy Crystal; a rerun of Jay Leno (NBC) features Lisa Kudrow and Natalie Cole; Tom Snyder (CBS) talks with Kenneth Branagh; Toni Morrison is scheduled for Charlie Rose (PBS); Joan Rivers and ACLU President Nadine Strossen are panelists on Politically Incorrect (ABC).

E T C.

During halftime of NBC's Super Bowl telecast on Jan. 25, you might want to forego the on-field festivities (what is it this year, Michael Jackson and the Teletubbies?) and switch over to MTV for its half-time special Celebrity Deathmatch Deathbowl '98, in which clay models of stars duke it out in stop-motion fights to the finish. The lineup: Howard Stern vs. Kathie Lee Gifford, Pamela Lee vs. Ru Paul and Hanson vs. the Spice Girls. The special also features an animated Marv Albert and the real voice of boxing referee Mills Lane. In related news, NBC has announced it will fill its football void in the fall with Sunday afternoon movies. Perhaps the network should consider picking up "Celebrity Deathmatch"?
