SALON'S TV PICKS FOR
WEDNESDAY, JAN. 28, 1998
BY JOYCE MILLMAN

S P E C I A L S

The documentary Roe vs. Roe: Baptism by Fire (8 p.m., Cinemax) profiles Norma McCorvey, the "Jane Roe" of Roe vs. Wade. A few years ago, McCorvey switched sides in the abortion battle; she is now a born-again Christian anti-abortion activist. The documentary series The Irish in America (check local times, PBS) wraps up with a look at famous Irish Americans.

S E R I E S

The Coors beer family is profiled in a new Biography (8 p.m. EST/9 PST, A&E). Seinfeld (8:30 p.m., NBC) reruns the episode where Jerry can't stop talking in the funny voice, George's boss tries to force him to leave the company and Kramer hires a personal assistant. And, you're right, this one was just on. On a new 3rd Rock from the Sun (9 p.m., NBC), Harry's pet Pickles (Bill Irwin) beams down for a visit and Sally wants to be pregnant. Ellen (9:30 p.m., ABC) and Laurie discover some incompatibilities when they take their first vacation together. On Law & Order (10 p.m., NBC), a serial killer uses a TV-violence-made-me-do-it defense.

S P O R T S

College basketball: West Virginia at Pittsburgh (7:30 p.m., ESPN); Clemson at North Carolina (9 p.m., ESPN).

NBA: Knicks at Heat (8 p.m., TBS).

T A L K

Dan Aykroyd and John Goodman plug "Blues Brothers 2000" on Rosie O'Donnell (syndicated); Michael Keaton and Blues Traveler appear on David Letterman (CBS); Jay Leno (NBC) hosts Yasmine Bleeth and Djimon Hounsou; Michael Boatman and Lizz Winstead are panelists on Politically Incorrect (ABC); Charlie Rose (PBS) has Bill Moyers and continued Clinton coverage; Bill Nye the Science Guy guests on Conan O'Brien (NBC).

E T C.

ABC has pulled the mega-low-rated Nothing Sacred and Cracker off the schedule; "Nothing Sacred" will return after February sweeps, but "Cracker" looks like a goner ... The Lifetime cable channel has bought the off-network rerun rights to Fox's Party of Five and will begin airing early episodes of the show five times a week in September ... David Letterman will be sending his mom, Dorothy, and his trusty stage manager, Biff Henderson, to Nagano, Japan, to file Olympics reports. What we really want to see is Rupert Jee annoying the figure skaters ...
