SALON'S TV PICKS FOR
MONDAY, MARCH 30, 1998
BY JOYCE MILLMAN

S E R I E S

Former first lady Lady Bird Johnson is profiled on a new Biography (8 p.m. EST/9 PST, A&E). Melrose Place (8 p.m., Fox) wraps up another season with a two-hour finale. On The Practice (10 p.m., ABC), Eugene defends a gang member accused of murdering another member during an initiation ritual.

S P E C I A L S

Moyers on Addiction (check local times, PBS) continues with a visit to rehab facilities in Georgia, Minnesota and Illinois. Ken "The White Shadow" Howard hosts Hollywood's Love Affair with Basketball (9:30 p.m., ESPN), a look at hoop-themed movies, including "Hoosiers," "Hoop Dreams" and "Blue Chips."

S P O R T S

And speaking of hoop dreams, Utah plays Kentucky in the championship game of the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament (9 p.m., CBS).

T A L K

Robbie Robertson and Evander Holyfield appear on David Letterman (CBS); Fran Drescher and Garth Brooks guest on Jay Leno (NBC); Ice Cube and Caroline Rhea are panelists on Politically Incorrect (ABC); a rerun of Conan O'Brien (NBC) features John Leguizamo and singer Victoria Williams.

E T C.

Julia Kavner (Marge) and Nancy Cartwright (Bart) will return to The Simpsons next season, but four other voice actors are still holding out for more syndication compensation from 20th Century Fox. A search has reportedly begun to find replacements for Dan Castellaneta (Homer), Yeardley Smith (Lisa), Hank Azaria (Moe and others) and Harry Shearer (Principal Skinner and others) -- as if any of them are replaceable ... CBS is celebrating its 50th anniversary by inserting characters from classic shows into episodes of current shows. Yes, it's the same horrid process used on those commercials where Fred Astaire dances with a vacuum cleaner and John Wayne bellies up to the bar. The trickery begins May 13 and includes Chad Everett from Medical Center inserted into Chicago Hope, Dick Van Dyke as Rob Petrie visiting Dick Van Dyke on Diagnosis Murder and such ghostly presences as Jack Benny visiting Cosby, Steve McQueen (from Wanted: Dead or Alive) on Walker, Texas Ranger and Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz haunting The Nanny. There's no truth to the rumor that CBS is calling it "Night of a Thousand Dead Stars"
