SALON'S TV PICKS FOR
TUESDAY, MARCH 31, 1998
BY JOYCE MILLMAN

S P E C I A L S

Kevin Spacey narrates the new documentary Steve McQueen: King of Cool (10 p.m., American Movie Classics), a profile of the actor who was a fast-driving icon of the late '60s and early '70s. Angela Bassett dons Tina Turner's shimmy dress for the 1993 film bio What's Love Got to Do with It (8 p.m., Fox). Laurence Fishburne plays Ike. Moyers on Addiction (check local times, PBS) examines drug abuse education as public policy.

S P O R T S

Baseball: Indians at Mariners (7 p.m., ESPN); Rockies at Diamondbacks (10 p.m., ESPN).

NBA: Pistons at Bulls (8 p.m., TNT).

S E R I E S

Buffy and friends race to save Angel from Spike and Drusilla's clutches on a rerun of Buffy the Vampire Slayer (8 p.m., WB). CBS airs back-to-back editions of Bryant Gumbel (9 p.m., CBS). Dateline NBC (10 p.m., NBC) airs the results of a year-long investigation into school bus safety. Sipowicz suffers complications from his prostate cancer treatment on NYPD Blue (10 p.m., ABC). The newsmagazine True Life (10 p.m., MTV) debuts. Serena Altschul anchors this show about issues concerning people under 30. The first episode examines an increase in heroin use in rural and suburban areas. The 100 Greatest Artists of Rock & Roll (10 p.m., VH1) are profiled, countdown style, in this new series. Tonight: the bottom 20.

T A L K

Rosie O'Donnell (syndicated) welcomes Kathy Bates and Jody Watley; Mimi Rogers, Don Rickles and Steve Miller guest on David Letterman (CBS); William Hurt (like Mimi Rogers, he's plugging the "Lost in Space" movie) appears on Jay Leno (NBC); scheduled guests on Charlie Rose (PBS) include FCC chairman William Kennard and David Bowie; Vincent Bugliosi, Ann Coulter and Kevin "Hercules" Sorbo are panelists on Politically Incorrect (ABC); Conan O'Brien (NBC) features Ice-T and Al Franken.

E T C.

Weight Watchers spokeswoman Sarah Ferguson will make a cameo appearance as herself in the cliffhanger season finale of Friends, which was filmed in England ... After just three episodes, Fox has yanked the drama Significant Others off the schedule because, well, viewers hate it. The latest show from the creators of Party of Five was supposed to keep the "Party" slot warm while the Salingers took a six-week break, but "Significant Others" was barely posting half of its predecessor's ratings. And with good reason: This was an amazingly annoying show about mopey, indecisive 20-somethings with three of the most unlikable lead characters you could imagine. All in all, it was pretty insignificant ... Chris Carter has reportedly informed the cast and crew of The X-Files that the show will indeed move its home base from Vancouver to Hollywood next season, per the request of David Duchovny, which, despite rumors to the contrary, must mean Mulder's sticking around.
