ENTERTAINMENT
THIS WEEK

Two Girls and a Guy
Tale of a womanizer and the women who confront him has brains and unrestrained eroticism

Sour Grapes
Larry David should have stayed with Seinfeld, and the small screen

Sliding Doors
A lightweight, glossy little picture, inoffensive, based on a dumb premise, is at least entertaining enough to keep you amused for an hour or two

SALON'S TV PICKS FOR
WEEKEND, APRIL 24-26, 1998
BY JOYCE MILLMAN

S P E C I A L S

The new TV movie Dallas: War of the Ewings (9 p.m. Fri., CBS) brings back the most dysfunctional clan in Texas for more back-stabbing, double-dealing fun. Bobby and Sue Ellen are now partners running Ewing Oil; J.R., who's the chief of a rival oil giant, is trying to buy them out. Larry Hagman, Patrick Duffy and Linda Gray star. Michelle Kwan, Ilia Kulik and Todd Eldredge are among the participants in the pro-am Ultimate Four Figure Skating Competition (8 p.m. Sat., NBC). The Unreal Story of Professional Wrestling (8 p.m. EDT/9 PDT Sun., A&E) shows you what people watched for kicks before "Jerry Springer" came along. Tom Hanks goes head to head with himself Sunday, starring as astronaut Jim Lovell in Ron Howard's rousing 1995 drama Apollo 13 (8 p.m. Sun., ABC) and producing the docudrama series From the Earth to the Moon (8 p.m. Sun., HBO), which just happens to be doing its own Apollo 13 story this week. The special-effects laden miniseries Merlin (9 p.m. Sun., NBC) begins. Sam Neill plays King Arthur's legendary magical mentor in this fanciful four-hour saga. The cast includes Helena Bonham Carter, Isabella Rossellini, Martin Short and John Gielgud. The new TV movie Nicholas' Gift (9 p.m. Sun., CBS) stars Jamie Lee Curtis and Alan Bates as a real-life California couple who became heroes in Italy after they donated the organs of their young son, who was murdered while on a family vacation.

S E R I E S

Law & Order (9 p.m. Fri., NBC) has a special Friday episode. A young quadriplegic is suffocated and family members are suspected. On Homicide (10 p.m. Fri., NBC), a retired detective (guest Charles Durning) steps in to help when an old murder case is reopened. Steve Buscemi directs the episode. The Simpsons' (8 p.m. Sun., Fox) 200th episode looks like a keeper: Homer challenges Springfield's incumbent sanitation commissioner (voice of Steve Martin) in a down-and-dirty election. The members of U2 also guest, singing a song written especially for the show. Dateline NBC (8 p.m. Sun., NBC) profiles Jerry Springer. Scully squares off against Satan on a new X-Files (9 p.m. Sun., Fox). The new Masterpiece Theatre offering "Painted Lady" (check local times Sun., PBS) is a contemporary drama starring Helen Mirren as a faded Janis Joplinesque blues-rock singer who undergoes a fashion makeover in order to pose as a Polish countess in a complicated sting operation to buy back a painting stolen from her friend, who needs the money to pay off drug debts. Sound a little complicated? It's a godawful mess! But for the hour or so that Mirren is in rock 'n' roll mode, she sure is fun, with her pierced nose and thrift shop threads. She's lip-syncing, by the way.
