SALON'S TV PICKS FOR
WEDNESDAY, JULY 8, 1998
BY JOYCE MILLMAN

S E R I E S

Great Performances (9 p.m., PBS) presents "Sam Shepard: Stalking Himself," a profile of the playwright-actor that includes an interview with Shepard, scenes from his work and comments from (among others) Edward Albee, Gary Sinise and Ed Harris. Followed by True West (10 p.m., PBS), a TV adaptation of Shepard's play that originally aired on PBS in 1984. John Malkovich and Gary Sinise star as brothers, one a screenwriter, one a thief, who are collaborating, more or less, on a modern Western. And then we have the regular summer fare: a rerun of 3rd Rock from the Sun (9 p.m., NBC), in which Sally has amnesia, and a rerun of Law & Order (10 p.m., NBC), in which Briscoe and Curtis probe a shooting at a restaurant.

S P O R T S

World Cup:
France vs. Croatia (3 p.m., ESPN)

WNBA basketball:
Houston Comets vs. N.Y. Liberty (7:30 p.m., ESPN)

S P E C I A L S

The 1995 thriller Hideaway (8 p.m., Fox) stars Jeff Goldblum as a dad who returns from a near-death experience psychically linked to a serial killer who's after his daughter (Alicia Silverstone). Armageddon: Target Earth (9:30 p.m., ABC), hosted by Leonard Nimoy, looks at the possibility of an asteroid hitting the planet. And if one did, it couldn't be a bigger bomb than the movie this show's plugging.
