Why people don't watch TV in the summer: Elizabeth Vargas anchors an ABC News Special (8 p.m., ABC) consisting of rerun segments related to the fashion and beauty industries, then Anne Archer and Isabella Rossellini host The World Fashion Premiere from Paris (9 p.m., ABC), a look at this week's presentation of fall and winter haute couture.
On a rerun of Friends (8 p.m., NBC), Ross tries to impress Emily by playing rugby and Chandler tells a big lie to get rid of Janice. Fox Files (9 p.m., Fox) reports on the youngest woman on death row. Seinfeld (9 p.m., NBC) reruns the one where Kramer retires and moves next door to the Seinfelds in Florida. 48 Hours (10 p.m., CBS) repeats a 1997 show following the FBI and Los Angeles police as they respond to a rash of bank robberies. On a rerun of ER (10 p.m., NBC), Anspaugh's son, a former cancer patient, has a relapse. The new series Super Adventure Team (10:30 p.m., MTV) is a spoof of '60s sci-fi marionette shows like "Thunderbirds Are Go," except the Super Adventure Team's kinky sexual quirks aren't all in your imagination. Comedian Dana Gould is one of the creators.
Rosie O'Donnell (syndicated) Mimi Rogers, Garth Brooks (rerun)
There's a posthumous tinge to the 1998 Emmy nominations, announced Thursday, with extinct series, departing cast members and two deceased actors winning nods. Jane Seymour and Ellen DeGeneres were nominated, although their series have been canceled. The late Phil Hartman will compete in the best supporting actor (comedy) category for his work on NBC's NewsRadio And Lloyd Bridges, who also died this year, was nominated for best guest performance in a comedy for his appearance as fitness nut Izzy Mandelbaum on "Seinfeld." NBC received the most nominations with 86. The most honored program was HBO's Tom Hanks-produced miniseries From the Earth to the Moon, with 17 nominations.
