S P E C I A L S

Steven Spielberg is profiled on a special two-hour edition of Biography (8 p.m. EDT/9 PDT Sun., A&E). The 1995 miniseries adaptation of Larry McMurtrey's Buffalo Girls (9 p.m. Sun., CBS) stars Anjelica Huston as Calamity Jane and Sam Elliott as Wild Bill Hickock. Adrian Lyne's controversial adaptation of Lolita (9 p.m. Sun., Showtime) finally has its American premiere. Jeremy Irons, Dominique Swain and Melanie Griffith star. The eight-part series War and Civilization (9 p.m. Sun., Learning Channel) chronicles armed conflict from the beginning of civilization to the present. Walter Cronkite narrates.


S E R I E S

The sitcom Getting Personal (8 p.m. Fri., Fox) moves to a new night. Vivica A. Fox and Jon Cryer star in this workplace/romantic comedy. Millennium (9 p.m. Fri., Fox) repeats its gruesome first episode. The new cable comedy/drama series Linc's (10:05 p.m. Sat., Showtime) debuts. Pam Grier, Georg Stanford Brown and Steven Williams (Mr. X of "The X-Files") star as friends who hold forth on topical issues in a tavern in Washington, D.C. The night's other new cable series, Rude Awakening (11 p.m. Sat., Showtime), is a sitcom starring Sherilyn Fenn (Audrey from "Twin Peaks") as a woman behaving badly; she's a former child star turned alcoholic trying to get her life together. Richard Lewis and Lynn Redgrave co-star. Claire Danes hosts a rerun of Saturday Night Live (11:30 p.m. Sat., NBC), with music from Mariah Carey. The Simpsons (8 p.m. Sun., Fox) reruns two great episodes. The first is the Emmy-nominated show from this past season in which Homer declares war on garbage collectors, then runs for sanitation commissioner. Steve Martin and U2 guest. The second (8:30) is a classic from last season in which Lisa strikes a lonely blow for scientific rationalism when the town goes nuts over the unearthed bones of an "angel." Stephen Jay Gould is the guest. The X-Files (9 p.m. Sun., Fox) reruns the one about the killer trees. Masterpiece Theatre (9 p.m. Sun., PBS) has a repeat of "Rebecca," starring Emilia Fox as the very young bride of widower Max de Winter (Charles Dance). Diana Rigg is Mrs. Danvers.
