N E W    S H O W S

Christina Applegate of "Married ... With Children" fame has the title role in Jesse (8:30 p.m., NBC), a sitcom about a single mom who tends bar in Buffalo and looks after her father and two brothers. From the executive producers of "Friends."

S E R I E S

And speaking of Friends (8 p.m., NBC), Ross, Emily and Rachel try to sort things out after Ross' Freudian slip during last season's wedding ceremony. Fox Files (9 p.m., Fox) reports on what the cast of "Seinfeld" is up to. Are their Thursday nights as lonely as ours? On the season premiere of Frasier (9 p.m., NBC), fired Frasier copes (barely) with unemployment. Veronica's Closet (9:30 p.m., NBC) welcomes Ron Silver to the cast in the season opener. Silver ("Chicago Hope") plays a smooth-talking tycoon who saves Veronica's business. The fifth season opener of ER (10 p.m., NBC) focuses on med student Lucy Knight (new cast member Kellie Martin) and her difficult first day in the ER rotation. Dan Rather reports on the crystal meth experience on 48 Hours (10 p.m., CBS). Not first-hand, we hope.
