WEEKEND, OCT. 9-11, 1998
BY JOYCE MILLMAN

S E R I E S

The new drama Legacy (8 p.m. Fri., UPN) is a soaper about a family of horse breeders in post-Civil War Kentucky. Ranch hands and fillies -- woo-hoo! Followed by the season premiere of The Love Boat: The Next Wave (9 p.m. Fri., UPN). Friday night by the glow of UPN -- it just doesn't get any better than this, does it? Millennium (9 p.m. Fri., Fox) concludes its season-opening two-parter introducing Black's new partner, FBI agent Emma Hollis (Klea Scott). A Mr. Show Marathon (Midnight Fri., HBO) unspools five hours of episodes from Bob Odenkirk and David Cross' surreal sketch comedy series' first two seasons (the new season starts Oct. 26). Teenage sketch comedy stars Kenan & Kel (9 p.m. Sat., Nickelodeon) begin their third season of Laurel and Hardy-esque hi-jinks. Trevor tries to put the life back in a failing marriage on Cupid (10 p.m. Sat., ABC). Masterpiece Theatre (check local times Sun., PBS) opens its 28th season with an adaptation of a recent London stage production of "King Lear" starring Sir Ian Holm and featuring stylized sets that drain of color as the king descends into madness. On The Practice (10 p.m. Sun., ABC), Rebecca teams with Berluti in the defense of a man accused of plotting the murder of his wife.

Emilio Estevez plays a gunslinger with no name in the new cable western Dollar for the Dead (8 p.m. Sun., TNT). A new TV version of Dostoevski's Crime and Punishment (9 p.m. Sun., NBC) stars Patrick Dempsey as the impoverished intellectual who commits murder and is tormented by both police inspector Ben Kingsley and his own conscience. The six-part documentary series Vietnam: The Soldiers' Story (9 p.m. Sun., The Learning Channel) portrays the conflict through combat footage and the comments of those who fought. Janet Jackson Live: The Velvet Rope (9 p.m. Sun., HBO) finds the singer performing at Madison Square Garden, the final stop on her current concert tour. (Airs live on the East Coast.)
