SALON'S TV PICKS FOR
WEEKEND, OCT. 16-18, 1998
BY JOYCE MILLMAN

N E W    S H O W S

Trinity (9 p.m. Fri., NBC) is a drama from "ER" producer John Wells about a volatile blue-collar Irish family with many, many problems. Tate Donovan heads the cast as the son who became a priest. And winning the award for the new season's most conceptually tortured (and not in a good way) show is Wind on Water (8 p.m. Sat., NBC), a soap about a ranch family in Hawaii led by strong-willed widow Bo Derek, who faces off with a greedy land developer (Lee Horsley) while her hunky teenage surfer-dude sons do a lot of extreme sports and partying. It's "Big Valley" meets "Dynasty" meets "Dallas" meets "Baywatch" meets ... Oh, forget it.

S E R I E S

Buddy and Bob are hired by a sports agent to keep a basketball star out of trouble on Buddy Faro (9 p.m. Fri., CBS). On Homicide: Life on the Street (10 p.m. Fri., NBC), Giardello's son transfers to the Baltimore Police Department and Aerosmith's Joe Perry guests as a narc. The Pretender (9 p.m. Sat., NBC) has its season premiere, as does Profiler (10 p.m. Sat., NBC). Lucy "Xena" Lawless hosts Saturday Night Live (11:30 p.m. Sat., NBC) with music from Elliott Smith. Masterpiece Theatre (9 p.m. Sun., PBS) has yet another version of "Wuthering Heights," this one is a two-hour TV movie starring Robert Cavanah and Orla Brady. On The Practice (10 p.m. Sun., ABC), Lindsay and Bobby take a big strategic risk in their defense of Lindsay's former law professor, who's on trial for murder.

S P E C I A L S

Disney's 1996 animated version of The Hunchback of Notre Dame (7 p.m. Sun., ABC) has its first network broadcast. Lea Thompson stars in the two-part miniseries A Will of Their Own (8 p.m. Sun., NBC), an epic look at the changing roles of women in America over the past 60 years through the eyes of a photojournalist recounting her family history. The cast includes Thomas Gibson, Ellen Burstyn and Faye Dunaway.
