Garry Shandling hosts the Beverly Hills gala, which includes testimonials from James Cameron, Robin Williams, Jamie Lee Curtis and others. The documentary Mercury 13: The Secret Astronauts (8 p.m. EDT/9 PDT Fri., History Channel) is a special "In Search of History" presentation about the 13 American women who qualified to become astronauts in the 1960s, but who never got the chance to go into space. Geraldo Rivera Reports: Blacks and Blue (7 p.m. Sun., NBC) examines tensions between police and African-Americans. The TV movie Thirst (9 p.m. Sun., NBC) is a thriller about a deadly parasite that dehydrates people no matter how much water they drink. Adam Arkin and Giancarlo Esposito star. Janine Turner plays an artist who becomes involved with a facially deformed man (Jamey Sheridan) in the new TV movie Beauty (9 p.m. Sun., CBS).

Fox's new series Brimstone (8 p.m. Fri., Fox) premieres. Peter Horton ("thirtysomething") stars in this horror thriller about a cop who dies and goes to hell, where the devil (played by John Glover) gives him a chance to redeem himself: He has to capture and bring back 113 evil muthas who escaped from the eternal fire pits. The word is it's gory as all heck. On Homicide: Life on the Street (10 p.m. Fri., NBC), Mike Giardello and Ballard investigate a shooting in a prominent family. Singer Lisa Loeb plays a rock star searching for her long-lost first love on Cupid (10 p.m. Sat., ABC). Ben Stiller hosts Saturday Night Live (11:30 p.m. Sat., NBC), with music from Alanis Morissette. The Simpsons (8 p.m. Sun., Fox) presents "Treehouse of Horror IX," its annual Halloween trilogy. This year, Bart and Lisa get sucked into an episode of "Itchy and Scratchy," Homer receives a hair transplant from an executed convict and Homer and Marge go on "Jerry Springer" to settle the paternity of Maggie. Andy Kaufman is the subject of a new E! True Hollywood Story (8 p.m. Sun., E!). The X-Files (9 p.m. Sun., Fox) reruns the "Post-modern Prometheus" episode, a "Frankenstein" homage filmed in black and white. Masterpiece Theatre (9 p.m. Sun., PBS) begins a two-part adaptation of "A Respectable Trade," Philippa Gregory's novel about the wife of an 18th century British slave trader who falls in love with an African slave.
