John Glenn, American Hero (check local times, PBS) looks at the former astronaut's career on the eve of his scheduled return to space aboard the shuttle Discovery. Comedy Central's "Night of a Thousand Bleeps" is probably the most accurately titled TV stunt in years. South Park (10 p.m.) leads it off with a new Halloween episode in which the town is plagued by a series of murders, Cartman turns nice and Stan thinks there's something strange about his new pet fish. Most of the bleeps occur in the two-and-a-half-hour Friars Club Roast of Drew Carey (10:30 p.m.), in which comedians young and old make Carey the subject of their raunchiest jokes (but it's all for charity). Among the participants are Alan King, Kathy Kinney, Ryan Stiles, Margaret Cho, Danny Aiello and Pat Cooper.
On the Halloween episode of Dharma and Greg (8 p.m., ABC), the couple finds some very creepy dolls in a secret room of their new home. Pacey's former love -- and high school teacher -- Tamara Jacobs (played by Leann Hunley) returns to Capeside on Dawson's Creek (8 p.m., WB). 3rd Rock from the Sun (9 p.m., NBC) has the first episode of a three-parter in which Dick gets a new office mate (Laurie Metcalf) and Sally tries to fix up Nina with Don's friend. On NewsRadio (9:30 p.m., NBC), Joe gives Matthew a "smart drink," and Max reveals his feelings for Beth. Chicago Hope (10 p.m., CBS) has a Very Special Episode in which former cast members return to help celebrate the hospital's 20th anniversary. Featuring appearances from Mandy Patinkin as Geiger, Roxanne Hart as Camille Shutt, Thomas Gibson as Nyland and Peter MacNicol as a ghostly apparition of the deceased Alan Birch.
